"The Lyndon Institute Kingdom Awards in Literature was founded in 1993 by former Lyndon Institute English Chair Burt Porter as a supplement to the University of Vermont's Vermont Honors Competition in Writing, which emphasizes academic essays. The Kingdom Awards offers Vermont high school students and English teachers the opportunity to focus on literary composition. In each the Student and Teachers of English Divisions awards are given in three categories - poetry, short fiction, and personal essay. The contest is judged by well-known Vermont writers who have made a commitment to fostering creative writing in the state through this program. Over the years such renowned writers as Galway Kinnell, Grace Paley, and Howard Norman have served as judges. Our current panel includes Ellen Bryant Voigt, Howard Frank Mosher, Gale Lawrence, Leland Kinsey, Craig Nova, and Garret Keizer. It is our hope that the Kingdom Awards will not only offer distinction to Vermont's students and teachers, but also cultivate a love for literature and a passion for a lifetime of writing." "This first volume of the Lyndon Institute Kingdom Awards Winners Anthology was created at the request of Headmaster Richard Hilton in order to document the achievements of the winners of the Lyndon Institute Kingdom Awards in Literature. Coordinated by LI English teacher David R. Stahler, Jr., and his wife, Erica, this competition illustrates Lyndon Institute's committed support for the arts and humanities. This hand-bound edition of Volume I of the Lyndon Institute Kingdom Awards Winners Anthology is one of ten. They layout was created by design instructor Ellen Dorn Levitt and design student Graham Keegan. The typefaces, Bell Gothic and Advant Garde, were formatted in Adobe Pagemaker and printed with an HP Laser printer on Neenah Classic Columns 80 lb. text paper. These ten copies were hand crafted by instructor Ellen Dorn Levitt with assistance from seniors Andrew Miller-Brown and Graham Keegan. A single hard-bound copy was presented to each Kingdom Award winner at the Seventh Annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner held on May 21, 2000, at the Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, Vermont.
