This collection consists of the diaries of James Stuart, leader of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1863. Stuart chronicles the daily events of the ill-fated journey, noting vegetation, wildlife, geology, and the Bannock and Crow Indian bands he and his men encountered along the way. A substantially altered version of the diary was published in Contributions to the Historical Society of Montana, Volume I (1876), by Granville Stuart with notes by fellow expedition member S.T. Hauser. Also included is a map ("Big Horn City Jas Stuart") of a proposed townsite at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Bighorn rivers, platted by the group when they passed through the area.
