"In volume one, David Rosheim has put together newspaper articles, biennial reports and other sources to compile a history of the first two State Psychiatric Hospitals, at Mt. Pleasant and Independence. Hope Rogers has lent her own story to be included in this book and Mike Cook also consented to share his writing about the institute at Independence. Mike is the museum curator of Independence Mental Health Institute. In volume two you will find the history of the other two institutes, at Clarinda and Cherokee. Since the hospital at Clarinda has now been closed this is a poignant story. Did you know there was an apiary at Cherokee? Volume three, the supplement, contains related journals and articles including some from administration, staff and patients. Some copies of 'The Clarion,' a magazine written by patients, are included in volume three. One superintendent has also written an article that is included."--Volume 3, page 4 of cover.
