This book is a study of the philanthropic and civic energies of the family in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey areas, touching on their global and national interests as well. Family members were involved in most of the progressive movements of their day, including progressive education, the Single-Tax movement, and feminism. They were among the pioneers in the Zionist movement and in German Jewish associational life, helping to found many of Philadelphia's Jewish social service agencies. Illustrated.
