Born in Australia and brought up in New Zealand, Coningham survived an eccentric family background to rise from farmhand via fighter-pilot to commander of Anglo-American air forces. During the first two years of the Second World War, Coningham commanded a group of heavy night-bombers before moving on to become head of the Desert Air Force. His leadership before, during and after the vital battle of El Alamein was critical to the eventual defeat of Rommel. While his forceful character earned him a high reputation, it also brought him into bitter conflict with such notable personalities as Patton and Montgomery.
