As head of the 2000-year-old Roman Catholic Church and the leader of its nearly one billion members, Pope John Paul II has one of the highest profiles of any public figure as moral authority, statesman, keeper of tradition, intellectual, and leader. From his childhood in pre-war Poland to his rise as a Cardinal under the communist authorities, this is the story of the man who has survived two assassination attempts and is credited with playing a pivotal role in the fall of the Soviet Empire.
