"Petersburg, Virgina ... embraces the site and memory of the most important fort on the Virginia frontier of the mid-17th century. It became a town when towns were few in colonial Virginia, as well as a manufacturing and transportation center when such were exceptions. It was a military objective and a battleground in two major wars. Certain aspects of its social and economic history are important to state and national history"--Publisher.
