The Book of Ballymote consists of 251 leaves or 502 pages. It was compiled by several different persons, chiefly Solomon O'Droma and Manus Duigenann, from ancient manuscripts still extant in 1391, when it was written. It takes its name from the place where it was compiled, Ballymote, County Sligo, then in the tuath of Corann. Presently in the Royal Irish Academy (Leabhar Bhaile an Mhóta, RIA MS 23 P 12, 275 foll.).
