"The Boston Athenaeum is an important and unusual cultural institution. The largest membership library in North America, the Athenaeum also boasts an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts as well as one of the most significant art collections at any American library. The twelve essays in this bicentennial publication address some of the most important events, issues, and initiatives during the Library's two hundred-year history."--Jacket.
